What is RAM?

Your PC's short-term memory — and why more of it matters depending on what you do.

The Simple Version

RAM (Random Access Memory) is your computer's short-term workspace. When you open an app, load a project, or run a game, it gets loaded into RAM so your PC can access it instantly. Your SSD or hard drive is where files live permanently; RAM is where your PC puts things it's actively working on right now. The more RAM you have, the more your system can handle at once without slowing down.

For Everyday Use

For browsing, streaming, emails, and light productivity, 16GB is comfortable and future-proof. 8GB is technically workable but you'll notice slowdowns if you have many browser tabs open alongside other apps. 16GB gives you room to breathe without overpaying.

For Gaming

16GB is the current standard for gaming. Most modern games use 8-12GB on their own, so 16GB leaves enough headroom for your OS and background apps. 32GB becomes useful if you stream while gaming, run a browser with many tabs open, or play especially memory-hungry titles. More than 32GB for pure gaming is generally unnecessary.

For Blender and 3D Work

3D work is one of the most RAM-intensive tasks you can do on a PC. Complex scenes, high-resolution textures, and large geometry all live in RAM during a render. 32GB is strongly recommended for serious Blender work. If you work on feature-film-scale scenes, architectural visualization, or large product renders, 64GB or even 128GB is not unusual in professional workflows. Running out of RAM mid-render causes crashes or forces Blender to use your slower SSD as overflow.

For Music Production

Sample libraries are the RAM killer in music production. A full orchestral template from a library like Spitfire or Kontakt can load 20-40GB of samples into RAM at once. If you're a bedroom producer working with lighter virtual instruments and synths, 16GB is fine. If you work with large sample libraries or want to load an entire orchestral template simultaneously, 32-64GB is where professionals land. Fast RAM also helps reduce sample streaming latency.

For Digital Art

Digital art is moderately RAM-intensive. Large canvas sizes (6000x9000px and above), many layers, and complex filter stacks all eat RAM. Photoshop and Clip Studio benefit from 16-32GB for comfortable work on large files. If you also run reference images, browsers, and music in the background while drawing — which most artists do — 32GB gives you the comfort to never worry about it.

DDR4 vs DDR5

DDR5 is the newer, faster standard. DDR4 is older but still highly capable and cheaper. Your choice is mostly decided by your platform: AMD Ryzen 7000 (AM5) requires DDR5. Ryzen 5000 (AM4) uses DDR4. Intel 12th/13th Gen supports both depending on the motherboard. For most use cases, DDR4-3600 and DDR5-6000 represent the sweet spots for price-to-performance.

Always Buy in Pairs

Always install RAM in matched pairs — 2x8GB, 2x16GB, or 2x32GB. Running two sticks in dual-channel mode roughly doubles your memory bandwidth, which has a measurable impact on performance across gaming, rendering, and audio work. A single 32GB stick is worse than two 16GB sticks running together.
