What is a Motherboard?
The foundation that holds your entire build together.
The Simple Version
The motherboard is the backbone of your PC. Every component — CPU, RAM, GPU, storage, fans, USB devices — connects to it. Without a motherboard, none of your parts can talk to each other. It's not the most exciting component to shop for, but getting it right sets the foundation for everything else.
Socket Compatibility — The Non-Negotiable
The single most important thing about a motherboard is whether its CPU socket matches your CPU. AMD Ryzen 7000 needs an AM5 board. Ryzen 5000 and earlier need AM4. Intel 12th/13th/14th Gen need LGA1700. This is not optional — a CPU won't physically fit a mismatched socket. Always confirm CPU and motherboard compatibility before buying.
Chipset — What Does It Unlock?
The chipset determines what your motherboard supports: overclocking, USB ports, PCIe lanes, and how many M.2 slots it has. For AMD, B-series boards (B550, B650) are excellent mid-range options. X-series (X570, X670E) are high-end with more connectivity. For Intel, B-series (B660, B760) are great value. Z-series (Z690, Z790) unlock CPU overclocking. Unless you specifically want to overclock, a B-series board saves money with virtually no practical downside.
For Creative and Professional Workloads
If you do music production, 3D work, or video editing, pay attention to connectivity. You'll want multiple M.2 slots for fast NVMe SSDs (large project files and sample libraries benefit hugely from fast storage). USB-C ports are increasingly important for audio interfaces, drawing tablets, and external drives. Thunderbolt support (on some Intel boards) enables high-bandwidth external devices like pro audio interfaces.
For Music Producers
Audio interfaces connect via USB or Thunderbolt, so make sure your board has enough USB ports and considers Thunderbolt if your interface requires it. Some motherboards have onboard audio that's surprisingly capable for casual use, but most producers use a dedicated audio interface regardless. PCIe slots matter if you use PCIe audio cards (common in professional studio setups).
RAM Slots and Expansion
Most ATX motherboards have 4 RAM slots, supporting up to 128GB. Micro-ATX typically has 4 slots as well. Mini-ITX only has 2 slots, limiting your maximum RAM — a consideration if you plan to load large sample libraries or work on complex 3D scenes that need 64GB+. Always check the maximum supported RAM before buying if memory capacity matters for your workflow.
Form Factor — Size and Case Compatibility
ATX is full-size and fits most mid-tower and full-tower cases — it's the most common choice and offers the most expansion options. Micro-ATX is slightly smaller, fits in compact mid-towers, and costs a little less. Mini-ITX is for small form factor builds — great for a clean desk setup, but limits slots and max RAM. Match your board size to your case before buying.
What Should I Buy?
For most builds, a mid-range B-series board is the right call. AMD AM5: MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk or ASUS ROG Strix B650-A. AMD AM4: ASUS B550-F or MSI B550 Tomahawk. Intel LGA1700: MSI PRO B760M-A or ASUS TUF B760M-Plus. Spend your money on the components that directly affect performance — your CPU, GPU, and RAM. The motherboard just needs to support them reliably.
