What is a GPU?
Way more than a gaming card — here's what it actually does.
The Simple Version
The GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is your graphics card. While your CPU handles general tasks one at a time, the GPU is built to do thousands of smaller calculations simultaneously — which makes it perfect for rendering images, video, and 3D scenes. It was originally designed for gaming, but today it powers everything from AI tools to 3D rendering to professional video work.
For Gaming
In gaming, the GPU is usually the single biggest factor in how many frames per second (FPS) you get. A weak GPU will bottleneck even the most powerful CPU. Match your GPU to your monitor: for 1080p gaming, an RTX 4060 or RX 7600 is excellent value. For 1440p, aim for an RTX 4070 or RX 7800 XT. For 4K, an RTX 4080 or RX 7900 XTX is the target.
For Blender and 3D Rendering
This is where a good GPU really earns its cost outside of gaming. Blender's Cycles renderer can use your GPU to render scenes, and the speedup over CPU rendering is enormous — often 5-10x faster. NVIDIA GPUs have an advantage here thanks to CUDA support, which Blender is highly optimized for. The RTX 3080, RTX 4070, and RTX 4090 are community favorites for 3D work. More VRAM also matters — complex scenes with high-res textures need room to breathe.
For Digital Art
For 2D digital art, your GPU accelerates canvas rendering, brush smoothing, and real-time filters in apps like Photoshop, Clip Studio, and Krita. A mid-range GPU makes large canvases feel fluid and responsive. Where GPU becomes critical for artists is AI-assisted tools — Stable Diffusion, Photoshop Generative Fill, and similar tools run on your GPU. More VRAM lets you run larger AI models locally. If AI art tools are part of your workflow, 12GB+ VRAM opens more doors.
For Music Production
Traditional music production is one of the few areas where the GPU barely matters. Your DAW, plugins, and virtual instruments all run on the CPU. The GPU just needs to power your display — even a basic integrated GPU is enough for most producers. The exception is if you use GPU-accelerated plugins or run AI tools alongside your DAW, in which case a modest dedicated card helps.
For Video Editing
Video editing apps like Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and Final Cut Pro all use the GPU to accelerate playback, color grading, and exports. DaVinci Resolve in particular is GPU-hungry — a better card means smoother real-time playback of 4K footage and faster exports. NVIDIA and AMD both work well; DaVinci Resolve has traditionally favored NVIDIA, while Final Cut Pro is optimized for Apple Silicon.
VRAM — Video Memory
VRAM is the GPU's dedicated memory. It stores textures, frames, 3D assets, and AI model weights. For 1080p gaming, 8GB is generally enough. For 1440p, 10-12GB is safer. For 4K gaming or Blender rendering with large scenes, 16GB is ideal. Running out of VRAM causes stuttering in games and crashes or quality loss in creative tools. If you do AI work locally, VRAM is the primary limiting factor.
NVIDIA vs AMD
NVIDIA's RTX cards support DLSS (AI upscaling for better FPS), ray tracing, and CUDA acceleration (important for Blender and AI tools). AMD's RX cards offer strong value at mid-range and support FSR (open upscaling that works on any GPU). For gaming alone, both are excellent. For 3D rendering, AI work, or video editing, NVIDIA's ecosystem currently has an edge. For pure price-per-performance gaming, AMD frequently wins.
