What is a CPU?

The brain of your PC — and how to pick the right one for what you actually do.

The Simple Version

The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the brain of your computer. Every action you take — opening a browser, launching an app, running a render, playing a note — gets processed by the CPU first. It handles instructions and coordinates every other part of your PC. Think of it as the manager: it doesn't always do the heavy lifting itself, but nothing happens without it.

Cores and Threads — Why They Matter

Modern CPUs have multiple cores, each one capable of handling tasks independently. More cores means your PC can do more things at the same time without slowing down. Threads are virtual versions of cores — a 6-core CPU with 12 threads can juggle 12 tasks simultaneously. For everyday use and browsing, 4-6 cores is plenty. For heavier work like 3D rendering, video editing, or running a DAW with lots of plugins, more cores directly translates to less waiting.

Clock Speed (GHz) — Raw Pace

Clock speed measures how fast a single core processes instructions, in GHz. Higher clock speed means snappier single-task performance — faster app launches, more responsive software, better real-time audio processing. For gaming and music production, high clock speed on a few cores matters more than having many slow cores. For Blender renders and video exports, having more cores often beats raw clock speed.

For Gaming

Gaming mostly relies on one or two fast cores rather than many. A 6-core CPU at high clock speed will outperform a 16-core CPU at low clock speed in most games. The AMD Ryzen 5 7600 and Intel Core i5-13600K are excellent gaming CPUs without overspending. You rarely need more than 8 cores purely for gaming.

For Blender and 3D Work

Blender is one of the most CPU-intensive workloads you can throw at a PC. CPU rendering (Cycles) uses every core you have — a 16-core CPU will finish a render in roughly half the time of an 8-core. If you do 3D modeling, animation, or rendering, more cores is one of the best investments you can make. The AMD Ryzen 9 7900X and Intel Core i9-13900K are favorites in the Blender community.

For Music Production

Music production is CPU-sensitive in a unique way — latency matters as much as raw speed. When you're playing virtual instruments live, your CPU needs to process audio in real time without dropouts or crackling. High clock speed is key here. A fast 6-8 core CPU handles most DAW workloads comfortably. If you run large orchestral templates with hundreds of tracks and plugins, 12+ cores helps. AMD Ryzen and Intel both perform well; make sure your audio interface has proper driver support for your platform.

For Digital Art and Drawing

Digital art tools like Photoshop, Procreate (on iPad), Clip Studio Paint, and Krita are relatively light on CPU compared to 3D work. A mid-range 6-core CPU handles large canvases, filters, and brush strokes without issue. Where CPU matters more is when you're exporting large files, running AI filters, or using neural-network tools like Photoshop's Generative Fill. A modern mid-range CPU covers you well here.

For Everyday Use

For browsing, emails, streaming, video calls, and light productivity, almost any modern CPU is more than enough. A budget 4-6 core chip like the Intel Core i3-13100 or AMD Ryzen 5 5500 will feel fast and responsive for everyday tasks without spending more than you need to.

Intel vs AMD

Both Intel and AMD make excellent CPUs. AMD Ryzen chips tend to offer more cores per dollar and run efficiently. Intel Core chips often have a slight edge in single-core speed, which benefits gaming and audio work. For 3D rendering and multitasking, AMD frequently wins on value. For gaming and music production, Intel trades blows with AMD. You genuinely can't go wrong with either — choose based on budget and which platform's motherboard prices suit you.

What Socket Does It Use?

Every CPU has a socket type — the physical interface that determines which motherboards it works with. AMD Ryzen 7000 uses AM5. Ryzen 5000 uses AM4. Intel 12th/13th/14th Gen uses LGA1700. Getting this wrong means the CPU won't physically fit the board — always double-check compatibility before buying.
