PC Terms,
Decoded.
Every term you'll encounter when building a PC — explained without the jargon.
CPU
Central Processing Unit. The brain of your PC — handles all general-purpose instructions and coordinates every other component.
GPU
Graphics Processing Unit. A specialized processor for rendering visuals, accelerating 3D renders, and powering AI tools.
RAM
Random Access Memory. Your PC's short-term workspace — holds everything currently in use so your system can access it instantly.
PSU
Power Supply Unit. Converts wall power (AC) into the DC power your components need. Reliability matters more than price here.
Motherboard
The main circuit board connecting all components — CPU, RAM, GPU, storage, and peripherals all plug into it.
SSD
Solid State Drive. Fast storage with no moving parts. Where your operating system, apps, and active project files should live.
HDD
Hard Disk Drive. Slower spinning-disk storage. Still useful for large media archives, sample libraries, and backups where speed matters less.
NVMe
A high-speed SSD interface that connects directly via PCIe. Dramatically faster than SATA SSDs — ideal for project files and OS drives.
PCIe
PCI Express. The high-bandwidth slot on your motherboard used for GPUs, NVMe SSDs, and expansion cards.
TDP
Thermal Design Power. The maximum heat a component generates under load, in watts. Used to size your cooler and PSU.
Overclocking
Running a component beyond its rated speed for extra performance, at the cost of more heat and power draw.
Bottleneck
When one component limits another's performance — e.g. a slow CPU preventing a fast GPU from reaching full speed.
DDR4 / DDR5
Generations of RAM technology. DDR5 is newer and faster; DDR4 is still widely used and more affordable. Your platform determines which you need.
MHz / GHz
Units of clock speed. MHz = megahertz (millions of cycles/sec), GHz = gigahertz (billions). Used for CPU speed and RAM speed.
Cores
Individual processing units within a CPU. More cores means better multitasking and faster work in apps that use multiple cores (like Blender).
Threads
Virtual cores created through hyper-threading. A 6-core/12-thread CPU can handle 12 parallel tasks.
Socket
The physical interface between CPU and motherboard. Must match exactly — AM5 CPUs require AM5 motherboards, for example.
Chipset
Chips on the motherboard that control features like overclocking support, USB ports, PCIe lanes, and M.2 slots.
VRAM
Video RAM. Dedicated memory on your GPU for textures, frames, 3D assets, and AI model data. More VRAM = larger scenes and models.
FPS
Frames Per Second. How many images your GPU renders each second in games or 3D viewports. Higher = smoother.
Ray Tracing
A rendering technique simulating realistic light, shadows, and reflections. Used in games and 3D software like Blender and Cinema 4D.
DLSS
Deep Learning Super Sampling. NVIDIA's AI upscaling tech that boosts FPS in games with minimal visual quality loss.
FSR
FidelityFX Super Resolution. AMD's open upscaling alternative to DLSS — works across GPU brands.
CUDA
NVIDIA's parallel computing platform. Used by Blender, DaVinci Resolve, and AI tools to run calculations on the GPU.
DAW
Digital Audio Workstation. Software used for music production — e.g. Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, Pro Tools.
Latency
Delay between an input and a response. In audio, low latency means what you play comes out of your speakers with minimal delay — critical for live recording.
Sample Library
A collection of recorded instrument sounds used in music production. Large libraries can use tens of gigabytes of RAM.
Audio Interface
An external device that handles professional audio input/output, connecting microphones and instruments to your PC via USB or Thunderbolt.
Render
The process of calculating and outputting a final image or video from a 3D scene or video edit. CPU and GPU intensive.
ATX / Micro-ATX / Mini-ITX
Motherboard size standards. ATX is full-size with most slots. Micro-ATX is smaller. Mini-ITX is compact but limits RAM slots and expansion.
Thermal Paste
A compound applied between the CPU and cooler to fill microscopic gaps and maximize heat transfer.
POST
Power-On Self Test. A quick hardware check your PC runs every time it boots before loading the operating system.
BIOS / UEFI
Firmware that runs before your OS. Used to configure boot order, RAM speeds, overclocking, and hardware settings.
M.2
A compact slot on your motherboard for NVMe SSDs. Much faster than traditional SATA drives and saves cable clutter inside your case.
Thunderbolt
A high-bandwidth port (common on Intel platforms and Macs) used for pro audio interfaces, external GPUs, and fast external storage.
